Amidst rumors that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s business partnership no longer serves them, the couple is reportedly “experimenting” with a professional separation.

Why would Prince Harry and Meghan Markle split professionally?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal work united the couple at personal appearances and other formal duties related to the crown. After they departed their royal roles in March 2020, Harry and Meghan took some time to find their footing outside of the House of Windsor.

They didn’t have to wait long. The couple were quickly signed to a reported 5-year $100M Netflix contract, as well as a podcast contract with Spotify and a book contract for Harry to write Spare. These endeavors netted the couple quite a hefty sum.

However, after debuting Harry & Meghan on Netflix, the couple’s next projects for the streaming service never caught fire. Meghan’s podcast was axed after one year. Harry’s book tour exposed cracks within the royal family, dividing the couple from the House of Windsor further.

Currently, the couple appears to have split professionally. They are working separately and reportedly “experimenting” with it being a more permanent part of their workload.

GB News quoted royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams who explained, “This is obviously a new tactic. The Sussexes want to promote their brand as best as they can.”

“They have tried something that has worked with the so-called royal tours of Nigeria and Colombia. Then we have got the solo engagements, so they are experimenting,” he continued. “The Sussexes need to keep their profile as they can’t attack the Royal Family at the moment, so now they have to think up new devices.”

Do Prince Harry and Meghan Markle work better solo?

For Prince Harry, he appears to work his best when he’s alone. He seems to show a more confident, relaxed persona during solo appearances.

Harry remains engaged with the Invictus Games. The next competition is scheduled for 2025.

In contrast, while Meghan is confident alone, she also appears to have no clear professional direction. Currently, Meghan has a project named American Riviera Orchard in the pipeline, but after months the lifestyle website still has not made its official debut.

Meghan was signed to WME in 2023. Film and TV series development and production, as well as business and brand partnerships, were the initial focus of her brand. No further news has been revealed about any new projects thus far.

When was the last time the couple appeared jointly?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle appeared in a joint video in honor of Veteran’s Day, the first time they were seen together in months. The pair discussed prioritizing children’s safety online through their Archewell Foundation.

“We are at a crossroads,” Harry stated. “The urgency to reassess and redefine our approach to protecting children has become increasingly evident. While the necessity has always been apparent, it’s now time to translate that awareness into meaningful action.”

Meghan walked down the aisle alone to Harry, with then-Prince Charles meeting her midpoint and escorting her to his son. It was during that time that a wedding demand made by Meghan left Harry spellbound.

Meghan insisted her 16-foot veil represented her transition into the royal family. The national blooms of all 53 Commonwealth countries were embroidered into the lacework. taking over 4,000 hours of handiwork.

Meghan Markle also honored her new husband by adding a sentimental touch to another part of her wedding ensemble. Hidden in her dress was a nod to an unforgettable moment they shared.

Meghan’s one-of-a-kind gown, crafted by Clare Waight Keller, artistic director of the fashion house Givenchy, hid a sentimental piece of material. Woven inside the dress was a square from the dress she wore on their first date.

“We basically sewed it into the hem of the wedding dress, so she was the only one that knew that it was there,” Keller said to The Independent. “It was a little blue gingham check. It was the perfect personal memento that was secretly hidden inside the dress.”

Meghan’s dress was estimated to cost over $200K. Shortly after the wedding aired on television, designer knockoffs of the streamlined wedding gown were available for purchase.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down for a BBC interview shortly after announcing their engagement. He spoke of Princess Diana and how he wished his mother was able to meet his fiancée. “They’d be thick as thieves, without question,” Harry said. “I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, you know so excited for me, but then, as I said, would have probably been best friends with Meghan.”

After Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped down as working royals and moved to the U.S., they signed a huge deal with Netflix worth more than $100 million to produce content for the streaming giant.

The explosive six-part docuseries Harry & Meghan about their time as members of Britain’s most famous family was a huge hit and garnered 81.55 million viewing hours globally in the first week of its release, and the show appeared in the Top 10 TV list in 85 countries. However, the couple’s follow-up projects — Heart of Invictus and Live to Lead — failed to gain any significant interest or views and flopped.

Now, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have produced another documentary. This one is about the sport of polo and is already being slammed by Harry’s friends who have played it themselves.

Netflix dropped the trailer for Polo on Nov. 21. The description for the program reads: “The documentary series follows elite global players on and off the field as they compete in the high-stakes U.S. Open Polo Championship in Wellington, Florida. Through fierce rivalries and intense training, viewers will get an unprecedented glimpse into the dedication and skill required to compete at the sport’s highest level.”

After seeing the trailer, friends of the prince who played polo with him when they were younger, didn’t like what they saw.

One pal told the Daily Beast: “The irony is that polo is actually a surprisingly inclusive sport these days. You do see plenty of rich kids but there are also plenty of kids from less rarefied backgrounds who just happen to be fantastic riders who are sponsored by the teams. It doesn’t look like this show is going to foreground that, which is a real missed opportunity.”

Another former friend who played polo with Harry as a teenager said: “It’s hilarious, but not in a good way. It’s so tacky and cringy. It is literally all the worst things about polo. I watched it in appalled hysterics.”

Netflix executives ‘incredibly disappointed’ in documentary

Many people who watched the trailer weren’t impressed either with a majority of commenters saying they will not be tuning in to the Sussexes’ latest documentary.

“Netflix could have just made a documentary about polo without Harry’s name and saved 100 million,” one person wrote, while another said: “Netflix, no thank you. It’s not even a documentary.” And a third added: “Harry and Meghan Kardashian. These duo have the ability to bring down the tone of everything they get involved with.”

Others expressed concerns about animal cruelty posting: “Tony Moore, chairman of the Fight Against Animal Cruelty in Europe, said, ‘Prince Harry is cruel. If a rider uses their spurs in a way that injures a horse then that is cruel’ and I refuse to support any sport or show that condones animal abuse for entertainment. Big no from me. Shame on you Netflix!!!”

PETA criticized the sport ahead of the trailer release and said polo is “hard on horses” and that “while it’s easy to be wooed by the glitz on display at the matches, there is no doubt that polo is more grim than glamourous for the horses.”

According to royal commentator and To Di For Daily podcast host Kinsey Schofield, Netflix executives have not responded to the accusations of animal “abuse” or “cruelty” but are “incredibly disappointed” at Prince Harry’s lack of involvement in the Polo docuseries.

“Netflix is incredibly disappointed that Prince Harry is not more involved throughout the project,” Schofield told Sky News Australia. “You know, [the company’s] return on investment simply isn’t there and they’ve learned the hard way.”

For the last several months Prince Harry has been hard at work promoting the upcoming Invictus Games.

In an effort to repair his reputation before the event kicks off in 2025, the duke has been globe-trotting everywhere from New York to London to Africa to Canada. A new promo shows Harry visiting a tattoo parlor during a stop in the Big Apple where he gets (fake) ink, and the chatter following the video’s release is all about the American accent and phrases Harry uses now.

According to an expert, he doesn’t sound anything like his royal relatives anymore. Check out the video below to hear for yourself.

Does Prince Harry have an American accent in new video?

The promo video features singer Jelly Roll who gives Harry a tattoo in exchange for performing at the upcoming Games. The two go back and forth for a bit with the duke being nervous about getting his “first tattoo” but eventually he decides to do so and it’s his “American way” of speaking that people have an opinion about. The prince uses phrases like “screw it,” “let’s do it,” and “dude.”

As Hello! noted, many fans took notice of the change in the way he speaks and posted about it on X with one user writing: “It sounds like Prince Harry is losing his British accent” and “Prince Harry’s British accent sounds more diluted to make way for the American accent.” Meanwhile, a third insisted that Harry’s old accent is completely gone writing: “He totally has an American accent now.”

Other commenters though are still unhappy with Harry and see his push to be liked again as desperate calling him “totally pathetic” and saying, “Oh gawd Harry trying SO hard to rebrand himself. What a joke,” and “He must miss being popular” while another person opined: “You know the Invictus Games are in trouble when to get people interested you don’t focus on the inspiration of someone who has overcome adversity but focus on overpaid celebrities who get millions to bring in crowds to make corporate sponsors happy.”

Expert says there’s a big difference between the way Harry and other royals speak

After the Duke of Sussex’s fans shared what they thought about the prince’s accent, communication coach and accent specialist Anthony Shuster weighed in. The expert took note of the “intonation in his speech–raising his voice at the end of a sentence–reminiscent of common American patterns” and agreed that Harry doesn’t sound like his British family members anymore.

Shuster told The Telegraph: “You notice that there’s a huge difference between the way the king speaks and the way Harry now speaks. There’s very little articulation at all in his speech–it’s far more relaxed.”

Shuster added that Harry’s accent transformation actually began years ago as early as 2019 “after meeting Meghan, there was already a noticeable shift.”

The Duchess of Sussex attended the event without her husband, and it isn’t the first time the two have shown up without each other. Earlier this year, Harry embarked on a number of engagements around the globe without his wife. He visited the UK and South Africa while Meghan stayed home and worked on her own business ventures. But according to insiders, it wasn’t long before the late monarch began to second-guess the duchess’ behavior. Elizabeth even went so far as to use a dismissive four-letter word to describe Meghan.

Queen Elizabeth broke royal rules for Meghan Markle

According to royal expert Richard Eden, Queen Elizabeth went out of her way to make Meghan Markle feel at home. From the get-go, she broke the rules for the American actor following her 2017 engagement to Prince Harry.

Eden writes, “While other women who had married into the Windsors, such as Kate Middleton and Sophie Rhys-Jones, had to wait until after their weddings to be invited to spend Christmas at Sandringham, Meghan was allowed to join Harry in 2017, five months before the big day. It was an unprecedented and highly personal gesture by the Queen.”

“Courtiers say the Queen believed that Meghan – a divorced, mixed-race American actress – would be a breath of fresh air and a great asset to the Monarchy. However, she was soon surprised at some of Meghan’s actions.

“Her Majesty was also taken aback at the divorcee’s choice of a white bridal gown for what was her second wedding. But it was Meghan’s attitude towards her headwear that gave the Queen more serious cause for concern,” Eden writes.

“Something later went badly wrong, however. When Meghan tried to arrange a fitting with the queen’s dresser, Angela Kelly, who, it seems, did not like the manner in which she was being treated by the bride and groom.”

In another gesture, Meghan was given the role of royal patron of the National Theatre and named Vice-President of the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust in 2018 per Eden. He said, “I have spoken to staff who worked at the Palace when the Sussexes were working royals. Some of them have told me that they formed the impression from the start that Meghan may not have wanted to make a success of her life in Britain.”

The Spectator reports that much of the palace’s view of Meghan Markle is clouded by the words of the late Queen Elizabeth. Reporter Kara Kennedy claims “The personal feelings of the late queen loom large.”

According to the report, Elizabeth “saw through Meghan Markle” and called the former actor “evil.” This interaction reportedly occurred during a reception the queen once hosted at Balmoral.

“At the drinks before the dinner, a small group was talking to the monarch. She explained that Harry meeting Meghan had become a complete catastrophe and described her as evil.”

The statement concluded; “By this point, we all knew the Queen’s health was in decline and she had months left. She seemed regretful about how things had panned out.”

Was Meghan and the queen’s relationship always tense?

Meghan Markle and Queen Elizabeth appeared to have a close relationship from the start. Outwardly, it looked as if Elizabeth ensured Meghan’s transition into the royal family was smooth.

After years of criticism as to how outsiders were not helped by royal family members to adjust, it seemed the royals were making a concerted effort to ensure Meghan was embraced by the clan. However, according to Meghan, she was unhappy with the support she received from the House of Windsor.

Meghan describes her royal life as one of isolation, control, and intense scrutiny. She told Oprah Winfrey she had to give up her passport, keys, and driver’s license. She had to ask permission to do things like meet her friends for lunch.

Frustrated, Harry and Meghan asked the queen if they could work out an arrangement where they worked for the crown in a part-time capacity. She denied that request.

Harry and Meghan subsequently made a complete break from the palace, announcing in March 2020 they were stepping down from their royal roles. A week later, the queen released a statement.

“Harry, Meghan, and Archie will always be much-loved members of my family. I recognize the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years. I support their wish for a more independent life.”

King Charles faced a life-altering 2024 after being diagnosed with an undisclosed type of cancer in January. Today, new cancer revelations add a scary twist to a year where the monarch battled the disease.

Robert Hardman, author of the book Charles III, New King, New Court, was interviewed by The Daily Beast. He shared details of King Charles’ unknown, past cancer scare.

In interviewing those close to the monarch for his book, Hardman found that Charles has faced a past cancer scare. Details regarding it have not been revealed publicly.

Per Hardman, perhaps that is why King Charles was practical about his diagnosis. “He was very matter-of-fact about it, with no panic. He has a strong sense of spirituality that buoyed him up. He’s brave.”

Charles underwent surgery to treat his cancer. However, Buckingham Palace did not disclose his treatment.

The king subsequently chose to share his diagnosis to help the public understand cancer and to prevent speculation. He also shared he was grateful to his medical team.

King Charles handled his diagnosis publicly while Kate Middleton chose to be private

Both King Charles and Kate Middleton were diagnosed with cancer in 2024. While Kate Middleton initially remained out of sight after her diagnosis, Charles was more public-facing.

Hardman explains, “He’s the head of state, so there’s a public right to know if he’s capable of fulfilling his duties. There was a decision not to be too heavy-handed about privacy.”

He continued, “When he came to London for treatment, he chose to travel in a state car so people could see him. With the princess, it was different; she’s a young, energetic mother of three, and the decision was made to keep it private. She doesn’t have a constitutional role, so she’s entitled to treat it as she wishes.”

Hardman believes that typically, both Kate and Charles are “private people.” In one of three public statements about her battle against cancer, Kate has announced that her treatment is complete.

However, Charles’ is ongoing. He has not made any public remarks as to when his weekly treatments will cease.

How has King Charles’ cancer diagnosis impacted Prince William and Prince Harry?

Upon a public statement that King Charles had cancer, Prince William did not share his thoughts on the subject. At that same time, he was dealing with his wife Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnosis.

In November 2024, William shared his thoughts about a “difficult” year.

William stated, “Trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult. I’m so proud of my wife, and I’m proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done. But from a personal family point of view, it’s been, yeah, it’s been brutal.”

Ever since Prince Harry released his memoir Spare, it’s been up for debate how much of what the duke revealed about his family is true. The reason for that is because while many want to believe that the book is an honest take of Harry’s life behind Palace walls others, know there are more sides to the story and we’ll never hear the rest of the royal family‘s side.

But now, there are some backing up what the prince said about being “sacrificed” so other royals could improve their own reputations. Here’s more on that and what one of Queen Camilla’s (formerly known as Camilla Parker Bowles) closest friends admitted about that.

In his book, Prince Harry didn’t hold back when he discussed his father’s wife and labeled his stepmother a “villain.”

During his promotional tour for Spare, the Duke of Sussex described Camilla as “dangerous.” And in a 60 Minutes interview, Harry doubled down and declared his stepmom “dangerous because of the connections that she was forging within the British press … and with her, on the way to being queen consort, there was gonna be people or bodies left in the street because of that.”

Moreover, in one passage of his book the prince wrote: “I had complex feelings about gaining a stepparent, who I thought had recently sacrificed me on her personal PR altar.”

A number of royal experts agreed that Harry was “sacrificed” when both King Charles and Camilla needed some good PR as their reputations were at an all-time low following Princess Diana’s death. According to Express, the story about Prince Harry’s drug use when he was a teenager was made public in order to help Charles’ reputation.

Journalist Charles Rae shared that the king did not force his son to go to rehab like people were led to believe, explaining: “Any royal involved in illegal activities is a great story, the only problem with this was, this was spin. This had not happened as they said. What had happened was that Harry had gone to this drugs rehabilitation place two or three weeks beforehand. It was spun then to try and show people that ‘Don’t worry, dad’s taken care of it. He’s taken him to a drugs rehabilitation unit to show him the evils of his ways.'”

Petronella Wyatt, a close friend of Queen Camilla’s, acknowledged that Harry was “sacrificed” as he said but agreed that it was more for his father’s reputation saying: “I think Charles was slightly distracted at the time. I think he would probably feel now he shouldn’t have allowed that … It does look like a son being sacrificed to make his father look better.”

Meghan Markle ‘isn’t happy’ with the idea of Prince Harry reconciling with the royals

Harry and Meghan met in 2016 and certainly had a whirlwind relationship. The two dated for just over a year before Harry proposed, and they tied the knot only six months later. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were on official royal duties for a little less than two years before they shocked the world by announcing their royal exit.

But this year, there have been some signs that Harry could be getting on better terms with the royals. He flew to the United Kingdom to be with his father after learning of King Charles’ cancer diagnosis, and the royals (including Prince William) publicly wished Harry a happy birthday earlier this year. Then, William made mention of his brother in the Prince of Wales’ homelessness documentary that premiered in October.

Meghan, however, reportedly is not “happy” with the idea of Harry and his family reconciling. “Meghan isn’t happy at all,” a source told Closer Magazine. “She’s panicking about Harry being sucked back into his old life.”

The source continued, “For her, it’s far better for Harry to be on the outside, so she can have him firmly and safely in her corner. The thought of him cozying up to his family again has struck a note of panic.”

Prince Harry likely won’t get too close too quickly

Although there has been some discussion of Harry working his way back into the royal family, it doesn’t seem like anything will happen too quickly. Harry has been on the outs with his family for a long time, so even if there is a want to repair the relationship, it would likely have to happen slowly.

Harry has said many negative things about his family, and whether they’re true or not, the family never gave their approval for Harry to speak about them — that, on its own, could result in it taking years for Harry to get closer to his family once again. For now, Harry and Meghan are continuing to raise their family in California, thousands of miles away from the royals.

A potential change to King Charles III’s staff might open the door to a royal return for Prince Harry. A royal author says the possibility of the king’s private secretary, Sir Clive Alderton, retiring might be the thing that clears Harry’s path to re-entering the royal fold.

Sir Clive Alderton’s retirement could mean a ‘friendlier path to negotiations’ for Harry

Royal author Tina Brown suggested on her Fresh Hell Substack blog, per Newsweek, that Alderton, private secretary to King Charles, might be looking to retire. It would be a big deal for Harry and his royal future because the courtier and Duke of Sussex didn’t get along.

With the 57-year-old gone, negotiating could be back on the table for Harry. “If Alderton goes it could create a new, friendlier path for negotiations with Harry to be given the security protection he seeks and to resume some curtailed version of his royal duties,” Brown wrote.

Meghan Markle, she added, might get a “great face-saver” out of Alderton’s potential retirement. The Duchess of Sussex, 43, “must realize by now that the dull demands of second-division royalty are less onerous than grinding out serial rebranding flops.”

“Enough with the feuds. Families, including this one, need to stick together,” Brown wrote. “[Prince] William, whatever his abiding resentments toward Harry for his intemperate broadsides in Spare, should now suck it up and let his father give Harry something to do.”

In his 2023 Spare memoir, Harry didn’t have kind words to say about Alderton. He nicknamed his father’s private secretary “The Wasp,” describing him as “lanky, charming, arrogant, a ball of jazzy energy.”

“He was great at pretending to be polite, even servile,” Harry explained. “You’d assert a fact, something seemingly incontrovertible—‘I believe the sun rises in the mornings’—and he’d stammer that perchance you might consider for a moment the possibility that you’d been misinformed: ‘Well, heh-heh, I don’t know about that, Your Royal Highness, you see, it all depends what you mean by mornings, sir.’”

“Because he seemed so weedy, so self-effacing, you might be tempted to push back, insist on your point, and that was when he’d put you on his list,” Harry went on. Then, “without warning, he’d give you such a stab with his outsized stinger that you’d cry out in confusion. ‘Where the f*** did that come from?’”

Alderton is one of the three courtiers Harry later claimed used “bold Machiavellian maneuvers” at the 2020 Sandringham Summit.

Prince William is still an obstacle to Harry’s royal return

Whenever Alderton retires it won’t necessarily be smooth sailing back to the royal fold for Harry. There’s still the matter of his estranged brother. The Prince of Wales, 42, as royal historian Robert Hardman told The Daily Beast, will need to be in total agreement with their father.

“Whatever the king does needs to be done in tandem with both brothers, not just one. He can’t have unilateral discussions if William isn’t in agreement,” Hardman said. “Whatever reconciliation or bridge-building happens, it needs to be a three-way process.”

“People keep asking about the king’s feelings, but William also has to be on board, which adds complexity,” he explained. “It’s tricky and a situation nobody wants. But whatever the way forward is, it has to work for everybody.”

Although William and Harry have been estranged for years, Hardman’s not ruling out a potential reunion. “All things are possible; never say never,” he said. “The bond between the brothers historically runs deep.” However, sharing private details of their lives in Spare is likely hard for William to move past.

“This is why William was upset by the book. Not because of specific depictions, but because of the breach of trust,” he said. “Things that happened between the siblings were made public, which is a huge deal for someone who values privacy like William.” For now, Alderton is still employed by King Charles with seemingly no retirement plans to speak of. At least not publicly. Meanwhile, William and Harry are still not talking.
