The holiday classic A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving will not air on network television in 2024 after decades of being shown on CBS, ABC, and even PBS. It will be available via streaming, but there is one way viewers can stream the holiday classic for free.

‘A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving’ will air for free 2 days in November

Typically, all Charlie Brown animated specials are available to watch on Apple TV+. However, there are two days in November when the holiday classic can be streamed for free.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving will air for free on Apple TV+ without a subscription from Saturday, Nov. 23 through Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024. This is ahead of the actual Thanksgiving holiday on Nov. 28.

It comes after PBS obtained rights to air the special in 2020 and 2021, courtesy of Apple. The company did not renew their contract with public television in 2022 and 2023.

When did ‘A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving’ originally air?

Charlie Brown and his dog Snoopy created one of the first Friendsgiving meals in the 1973 holiday special. A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving was one of the first animated shows dedicated to Thanksgiving.

The Peanuts website describes as “Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and Linus concoct the most original Thanksgiving menu since 1621 (buttered toast and pretzel sticks, anyone?). The Peanuts Gang also learns how to put the ‘thanks’ in Thanksgiving.”

A trio of Peanuts holiday specials aired for decades on CBS. The network began running A Charlie Brown Christmas in 1965; and It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown in 1966.

Other holidays also received the Charlie Brown treatment. There’s also Be My Valentine Charlie Brown (1975), It’s the Easter Beagle Charlie Brown (1974), and Happy New Year Charlie Brown (1986).

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving tells the story of Charlie Brown and his friends, who celebrate the holiday together after Peppermint Patty invites herself and friends Franklin and Marcie to his home. Not knowing how to tell her “no,” Charlie Brown and Snoopy prepare a Thanksgiving dinner with their limited cooking abilities.

Instead of the traditional turkey, potatoes, stuffing, and sweet potatoes, the friends, including Linus and Woodstock, were treated to popcorn, toast, pretzels, and jelly beans. However, Peppermint Patty voiced her displeasure at the meal, making Charlie Brown and Snoopy upset.

She was subsequently corrected by Marcie. The little girl told Peppermint Patty she pushed herself onto Charlie Brown for the holiday. The story concludes with an apology, the real meaning of Thanksgiving, which is spending time together as family and friends, and a trip to Grandma’s house for a proper meal for everyone.

They may have brought the Apple TV+ original series to life—along with showrunner Bill Lawrence—but Jason Segel, who plays Jimmy, a therapist grieving the death of his wife on Shrinking, wasn’t hanging out with Brett Goldstein on set. Segel didn’t want to look at the Ted Lasso alum because of their characters’ “painful” past.

Goldstein plays the drunk driver behind Tia’s death in ‘Shrinking’ Season 2

Shrinking Season 1 kept the identity of the drunk driver involved in the fatal crash that killed Jimmy’s wife, Tia (Lilan Bowden), a mystery. All that changed in season 2 when flashbacks finally revealed Goldstein as Louis, or “Double D” (drunk driver).

Jimmy thought back to the night that turned his and daughter Alice’s (Lukita Maxwell) lives upside down. Initially, viewers saw a person’s outline as they were put in the back of a police car at the site of the accident. Later, though, another flashback showed their face and it was none other than Goldstein.

Since then, Louis has popped up in subsequent episodes of Shrinking Season 2. In one, Alice confronted Louis in a tense meeting at the coffee shop where he works. In another, Louis met a very surprised Brian (Michael Urie) outside Jimmy and Alice’s house.

Segal didn’t want to ‘look at him in the face’

The warmth between the Shrinking co-creators cooled when filming began. “It was tender up until the moment we had to walk onto set together,” Segel told TheWrap. The reason? Louis is “this guy who’s coming back into Jimmy’s life in the most painful way possible.”

“I didn’t want to look at the guy because I wanted it to feel that way,” Segel explained, noting he didn’t do method acting, but he tried to keep Jimmy’s feelings about Louis close when cameras weren’t rolling.

“I don’t carry it around with me, but this character that Brett was playing is the cause of a lot of Jimmy’s pain, and I just didn’t really want to look at him in the face,” he said.

In the same interview, Segel also revealed the part of Louis wasn’t Goldstein’s from the start. Originally, Louis was supposed to be younger.

“He was written a little younger before, and it was just a little bit different than Brett,” Segel said. “Brett and I are about the same age where we have a similar sensibility, and it just felt really exciting to play these scenes with him.”

“I think we always knew Brett would do something in the show,” he continued, noting the “plan” was for Goldstein to have a “lighter, kind of maybe comedic arc of a few episodes.” But that changed once Segel “said out loud what […] everybody in the room knew in their gut”— “that Brett should play that part.”

Lawrence saw Goldstein’s Louis as a mirror for Jimmy. “I wanted to do that with somebody who felt like a reflection of Jimmy. That when these two guys were standing face to face, they were looking at themselves. That was the picture that I thought was important, and I feel that way about Brett.”

While the making of Shrinking Season 2 was certainly “fun” for Jessica Williams, or Gaby to fans, the actor felt “really stressed” as production on the Apple TV+ original series returned. Ahead, what made Williams “really nervous” as she reprised her role in the comedy-drama and how she overcame her nerves.

Williams worried about her ‘Shrinking’ performance being a ‘fluke’

Williams, who received an Emmy nod for her portrayal of Gaby in Shrinking Season 1, admitted to Deadline how “stressed” she felt as production on season 2 got underway. (The season premiered on Oct. 15, 2024.) About what exactly? Giving yet another award-nominating turn as the therapist who drinks from a massive water bottle and wears colorful outfits.

“We did the Emmys in January [2024] and because there was so much time, I didn’t know if I remembered Gaby,” Williams said. “We were gonna film literally in a few weeks after the strike started, we were supposed to film.”

The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes started in July 2023, ending nearly four months later to the day. Williams and her co-star, Jason Segal, who also co-created Shrinking, were both nominated for Emmys.

“And so, I was really stressed for season 2, being like, ‘Do I remember her? Can I do it? Will I be able to hit the notes? Was it a fluke? Like I got nominated for this Emmy. Can I do it again?’”

“I put all these unfair [things]—it’s my loop of like perfection and expectations—on myself,” she added.

She remembered the ‘freedom’ of playing Gaby when filming on season 2 started

It didn’t take long for Williams’ nerves to go away. She quickly realized why playing Gaby “works” for her when she returned to the Shrinking set.

“It was so nice to be able to walk on set and be like, ‘Oh, the reason why this character works for me is because I have the ability to like kind of f**k around and find out with the comedy,’” she said.

“There’s freedom there,” she added. “And so it felt good to remember that and to have this character that I actually knew her bones really well.”

“So I got to have a lot of fun,” she added, “but I was really nervous.”

What ‘bummed’ Williams out about ‘Shrinking’ Season 2

The Emmy nominee continued, sharing how disappointed she’d been when a potential singing-in-the-car moment with Paul (Harrison Ford) got cut short after her and Ford’s characters sang along to Sugar Ray’s “Every Morning” in Shrinking Season 1.

“I actually didn’t write that,” Williams said of the musical moment Gaby cut short during her and Paul’s drive to work in the season 2 premiere. “You could tell [Shrinking co-creator] Bill Lawrence if you talk to him. Tell him I was bummed as well. I was really bummed about that.”

Williams hinted at other “fun” moments with Ford in season 2. Calling them “all fun,” she shared her “favorite scene” involves Wendie Malick as Paul’s girlfriend Julie.

“Gaby has this obsession with Julie and Paul and would probably love to be in a throuple with them,” the actor said of her character. “If they ask, she would just love it. But that’s my favorite stuff to do with Harrison. It just kind of writes itself. Oh, it’s great.”

Another week, another episode of Shrinking. The Apple TV+ original series is back, this time with the Nov. 13 episode titled, “In a Lonely Place.” Ahead, a recap of the latest Shrinking Season 2 episode from Paul (Harrison Ford) and Jimmy (Jason Segel) teaming up to Brian (Michael Urie) spilling his big secret to Alice (Lukita Maxwell).

Paul and Jimmy talk to Sean’s dad

In the latest episode of Shrinking, which began streaming on Nov. 13, 2024, on Apple TV+, Jimmy does his thing—“Jimmying” patients—after Sean’s fight lands him in the hospital. Well, in this case, he wants to “Jimmy” Sean’s dad, Tim (Kenajuan Bentley), with Paul.

“We are not gonna go ‘Jimmy’ some patient’s father,” Paul says, before agreeing to join Jimmy “just for damage control.” The two proceed to have a hilarious moment as Tim fishes, trying to impart their wisdom from a canoe.

It works because later Tim goes to the hospital to apologize to Sean before sitting down for a heartwarming father-son chat while Jimmy and Paul take in the moment from the hallway.

Alice talks to Louis after Brian reveals his secret

Meanwhile, Brian finally spills the details on what’s going on with him and Louis, played by Shrinking co-creator Brett Goldstein. Or as he tells Alice, “the young man who ran over your mom.” In a monologue that impressed the Shrinking cast, he recapped what happened after he saw Louis outside Jimmy and Alice’s house.

“He came here, and I was like, ‘Get away from this family. Scram!’ And he was like, ‘Sorry,’ but he seemed wounded,” Brian said, calling Louis’s life “bleak.”

“He has no friends, no one to talk to, he’s suffering,” he explained to Alice. “So I took a walk with him and we talked because I knew I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t at least try to help.”

Upon learning Brian’s been “palling around” with Louis, Alice demands he take her to see Louis. With Brian by her side she proceeds to tell Louis the heartbreaking contents of the letter she wrote him. But it isn’t all tears. They reminisce about fond memories of Tia, which brings some smiles and laughter.

Liz feels ‘a bit off’ and sees someone from her past

Viewers see a different side to Liz (Christa Miller) in the Nov. 13 episode of Shrinking. Instead of the confident, nosy yet lovable neighbor, she’s feeling “a bit off.” The house she and Derek (Ted McGinley) share is once again empty after their youngest son, Connor (Gavin Lewis), finally returns to college.

In the wake of the food truck disaster—Liz sold her share to Sean’s dad—another, albeit smaller, one follows at the local dog shelter. They won’t put Liz’s portraits of the dogs who are available to adopt on the walls for potential new owners to see.

Gaby, played by Jessica Williams, encourages her to reflect on it while doing what she loves—playing with rocks. It’s then that she opens up to Derek. “I’m feeling like, I don’t know. You ever feel like you’re a bit off, like you’re underwater? It’s so stupid. That thing with the dog photos really got to me, you know.”

Derek reminds her the house is “less noisy” without their sons and suggests he get her another food truck. Later, in the final moments of the episode, Liz is catching up with her old flame, Mac, played by Miller’s former Cougartown co-star Josh Hopkins. It ends with the two heading to the park so Liz can take photos of his dog.

So much, in fact, that she got caught by her husband looking “too thirsty” in scenes with Ford while filming the Apple TV+ original series. Ahead, how Miller reacted to her husband’s critique and one of her “favorite” season 2 scenes to come.

Christa Miller is ‘obsessed’ with her ‘Shrinking’ co-star

Miller, or Liz, the meddling yet lovable next-door neighbor on Shrinking, praised Ford, who plays Paul, an accomplished therapist navigating Parkinson’s Disease, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“First of all, I love Harrison—he’s also my neighbor—Harrison kills me, I’m obsessed with him,” Miller told the publication. “I love [Ford’s wife] Calista [Flockhart] as well. But he’s so funny to work with. He’s so dry and so funny, but it’s also such a pleasure.”

Miller and Ford star in Shrinking alongside Jason Segel as Jimmy, a therapist—and Paul’s protégé—who decides to try unconventional methods with patients while grieving the death of his wife, Tia (Lilan Bowden), and raising their teenage daughter, Alice (Lukita Maxwell).

“I had to do a scene with him and I was just, like, mesmerized,” Miller said of Ford. “My husband was on set that day, and he said, ‘Christa, you’re being too thirsty. You’re having a problem when you’re talking to him.’”

Miller is married to Bill Lawrence, the producer and writer who co-created Shrinking with Segel and Brett Goldstein (Louis). Lawrence is behind other hit shows such as Ted Lasso and Scrubs.

Miller’s reaction to her husband’s critique? “I’m like, ‘Oh, sorry, my bad.’ Because he’s [Ford] so good,” the 60-year-old continued. “You just can follow him and you can forget everything that you thought about. And your performance will be good too, just to work with him.”

She also shared “it’s really hard not to break” into laughter during Ford’s “comedic scenes.”

A ‘favorite’ moment of Miller’s in ‘Shrinking’ Season 2 is coming soon

Get ready for one of Miller’s “favorite scenes” in Shrinking Season 2 when the Nov. 13 episode airs. It’s a monologue—no spoilers—that’s equal parts emotional and light-hearted delivered by Jimmy’s longtime bestie, Brian, played by Ugly Betty alum Michael Urie.

“One of my favorite scenes—and Michael gets to do it twice—is his speech,” Miller told TV Insider. “Which is a) hilarious, and b) has so much emotion going around it that he’s copping to this and vulnerable, and then it’s hysterical. When I first saw it, I had to rewind and watch it 50 times. And then he gets to do it again as funny as well.”

‘Shrinking’ Season 2: Lukita Maxwell on the ‘Fun Shock’ of That Kiss and Why It Reminded Her of ‘Harry Potter’

Lukita Maxwell is opening up about Alice and Connor’s kiss on Shrinking. In season 2 of the Apple TV+ original series, she and her co-star, Gavin Lewis, who is also a childhood friend, kiss following an intense evening for Alice.

In Shrinking Season 2 Episode 3: “Psychological Something-ism,” which aired on Oct. 23, 2024, Alice kissed her next-door neighbor, Connor, after meeting Louis (Brett Goldstein), the drunk driver involved in the crash that killed her mother, Tia (Lilan Bowden).

Remember the surprise on Connor’s face as Alice leaned in for a kiss? After all, Connor’s dating Summer (Rachel Stubington) and Alice already made her disinterest in the college student clear. The kiss was surprising to Maxwell, too.

In an interview with TheWrap, she called every Shrinking script a “fun shock” and explained that kissing Lewis was surprising because they’re longtime friends.

“Any sort of romantic scene, on that basis, [is] not shocking to me. I was excited that Alice had some romantic things popping up in season 2,” Maxwell said.

“What was shocking was the fact that [writers] had developed that relationship between Alice and Connor,” she continued. “Specifically because the writers know that me and Gavin…have been childhood best friends since we were maybe, like, 8 and 10 years old.”

“He’s, like, my little sister’s best friend from childhood,” she added. “So it was a shock to get the script.”

The scene reminded Maxwell of Emma Watson and Rupert Grint’s ‘Harry Potter’ kiss

Alice and Connor’s kiss had Maxwell thinking back to Rupert Grint and Emma Watson’s kiss in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Namely how in behind-the-scenes footage from the 2011 movie, the longtime co-stars described how strange it was to have a romantic scene.

“I thought about…the BTS of Emma Watson and Rupert Grint kissing in the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, or whichever one it was,” Maxwell said. “And them talking about how it was like, ‘I love this person so much. But it’s just odd.’ It’s just odd kissing them.”

So, how did Lewis and Maxwell get through it? They talked about the scene during a phone conversation. “Gavin and I called each other just being, like, ‘Wow,’” Maxwell said. “Obviously, we’re both actors, and it’s fine.”

Alice ‘makes mistakes’ and goes ‘through chaos’ in ‘Shrinking’ Season 2

The lip-lock with Connor won’t be Alice’s only slip-up in Shrinking Season 2. No longer is she an “anchor,” as Maxwell told Yahoo Canada. “I was really excited to dive into her mentality,” Maxwell said of her character. “Going from a rock, an anchor in season 1, to seeing her make mistakes and go through chaos and learn how to ask for help, and ask for forgiveness.”

Alice embraces some of the hallmarks of being a teen as she and Jimmy (Jason Segel) return to a more typical father-daughter dynamic. According to Maxwell, their relationship is “more amiable” this time around. Although Alice’s concern for her dad hasn’t gone away.

“She’s just looking out for him. She wants to make sure he doesn’t fall back into his old chaos,” Maxwell said.

‘Shrinking’ Star Ted McGinley Thinks Derek Would Be With This Character if He Weren’t Married to Liz

For Shrinking fans, it might be hard to imagine Liz (Christa Miller) and Derek (Ted McGinley) being married to anyone else. After all, they’re a hilarious, weird, and lovable TV couple. In short, they just work. But if they weren’t together McGinley knows exactly who Derek would couple up with on the Apple TV+ original series.

Derek would be married to Gaby: ‘He loves her’

Therapist Gaby (Jessica Williams) and Derek? The Married…with Children alum thinks it’s possible. “Derek just loves Gaby. I think if Derek wasn’t married to Liz he would be married to Gaby; he loves her,” McGinley told Screen Rant. “They have this thing that is sort of unsaid.”

“In real life, we just hit it off in season 1,” he said of him and Williams, who received an Emmy Award nomination for her performance. “It was fun to hang, and I just thought, ‘Wow, I can feel this going,’ and it worked on camera. […] Derek listens to her, and Derek gets her, and Derek really does love her and respect her.”

“I think it’s one of the great things about Derek,” the actor added. “He sees people and he makes room for people, and you don’t have to be perfect.”

‘There is a lot going on’ for Liz and Derek in ‘Shrinking’ Season 2

As for what’s in store for Shrinking Season 2—new episodes began on Oct. 16, 2024—McGinley shared that Liz and Derek have “a lot going on.”

“There is a lot going on with the two of them and that is one hell of a ride,” he said. “You will meet their family, you’ll meet the boys, so it’s a great year for Derek and Liz.”

Just like season 1, however, there are ups and downs. Praising Miller’s acting chops in a “very difficult season” with what “she has to play,” McGinley teased that it’s full of surprises.

“Everything is different than you think it’s going to come, and I love that, I live for that,” he said. “In fact, there’s not one actor on the show that gives you what you think is going to come, and that’s so much fun.”

The series stars Jason Segel as Jimmy, a single father and therapist who decides to try unconventional methods with patients—brutal honesty—while grieving the death of his wife and raising their daughter, Alice (Lukita Maxwell). Colleagues Paul (Harrison Ford) and Gaby, along with next-door neighbors Derek and Liz, soon become his support system.

McGinley didn’t want to tell anyone about his ‘small’ part on ‘Shrinking’

The Shrinking star wasn’t eager to share his addition to the show with the people in his life. Why? As McGinley explained during a panel discussion alongside the rest of the show’s cast, he didn’t want loved ones to be disappointed upon seeing his “so small” role.

“I’ll never say I’m on a show again,” McGinley said (via Vanity Fair). “Because every day more people are discovering it and giving me a hard time for not mentioning it It’s been such a joy.”

Initially, McGinley played Derek as part of a recurring role before becoming a series regular in Shrinking Season 2.

The Shrinking script, the actor recalled, really stood out to him. “It was the best half-hour script I’ve ever read in my lifetime; it made such a mark,” McGinley said.

Gilmore Girls alum Kelly Bishop returns to TV on Shrinking. In the latest episode of the Apple TV+ original series, she guest stars as Susan, the ex-wife of grumpy yet loveable therapist Paul (Harrison Ford). Bishop’s years playing Emily Gilmore aren’t the only reason the people behind Shrinking wanted her on the show. The Shrinking creator had other reasons for casting the award-winning actor as Paul’s ex-wife.

Kelly Bishop plays Paul’s ex-wife, Susan, in ‘Shrinking’ Season 2

Paul got a visit from his ex-wife, Susan, during the Nov. 6, 2024, episode of Shrinking. And who played the woman the gruff therapist had only referred to in less than glowing terms up until then? None other than Bishop. The Gilmore Girls alum guest-starred in the “Honesty Era” episode. Her character, Susan, visited when she and Paul’s daughter, Meg (Lily Rabe), came to town to give a big presentation.

“Just talk to your ex. You don’t even know why she’s here,” Brian (Michael Urie) told Paul. “Maybe she found a painting worth a billion dollars and you get half. It could be fun news.” Hint: It’s not.

When Paul asked Susan the reason for her visit she told him: “I had a friend recently who got diagnosed with Parkinson’s. She died a few months later, and I felt like you and I should talk again before you die.” Turning back to Brian, Paul sarcastically said, “You were right—fun news.”

Soon Paul and Susan sat down for a heart-to-heart. “I couldn’t forgive myself so how could you forgive me,” Paul said about his infidelity during their marriage. Much to his surprise, Susan shared she’d forgiven him “a long time ago.”

Their reunion ended on a positive note with words from Susan: “Still, no matter what we did to each other we made Meg, and she’s perfect.” If there was any doubt Paul and Susan weren’t on good terms, the pair revived a version of their old Pick and Sip drinking game, sipping from a flask during Meg’s presentation.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly before the episode aired, Lawrence, who created Shrinking with Jason Segal and Ted Lasso alum Brett Goldstein, shared why the show’s team wanted Bishop to play Susan. “We always knew we were going to bring Paul’s ex-wife in because the second season was a lot about dealing with your past,” Lawrence said. “And you can’t really move forward until you deal with your past.”

It’s also partially because of the Broadway love of the staff of Shrinking.”

Cindy Crawford revealed in the Apple TV+ docuseries The Super Models that talk show host Oprah Winfrey treated her like a child during a 1986 interview on Winfrey’s show.

During an appearance alongside Elite Modeling founder John Casablancas, Crawford recounted being referred to like she was chattel or a child when Winfrey asked her to stand up and exclaim that she had a “very good” body.

“I was like the chattel or a child, like be seen and not heard,” Crawford recounted in the docuseries. “When you look at it through today’s eyes when Oprah’s like, ‘Stand up and show me your body,’ like show us why you’re worthy of being here. In the moment I didn’t recognize it. Only when I look back at it and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, that was so not OK really.’ Especially from Oprah.”

What was the context of the Oprah Winfrey interview?

At the time, Crawford was a 20-year-old model still emerging into the pop culture scene. Casablancas was Winfrey’s guest and she mainly referred to Crawford’s physical appearance during the conversation.

“Did you have to groom her or did she always have this body? This is unbelievable,” Winfrey said to Casablancas about Crawford. “Stand up just a moment, because no one saw you come in standing up.” Crawford stands up.

“Now this is what I call a body. Very good, very good,” Winfrey observed.

Despite the fact that Crawford sat next to Casablancas, Winfrey directed the interview toward him when she referred to Crawford.

“With Cindy, in terms of looks it was very easy,” Casablancas explained. “She wasn’t sure if she really wanted to model. For her, it was more a question of mental stability. She wanted to feel good and comfortable.”
